The lecture will focus on the art of the bakhens, or marshaliks— Jewish wedding poets, jesters, clowns, organizers, and so on. Having had emerged in the Ashkenazic Jewish cultural tradition in the late Middle Ages, the trade of badkhens remained widely in demand and active till the Holocaust; and after that it was reborn predominantly in the Hasidic communities in North America and Israel.
